Larry's Flying Service operated in an Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) leased hangar on the Galena airport apron from the mid 1970s to 2013. The hangar collapsed from snow load in 2012 and has been demolished, but the concrete slab foundation remains. A Class V injection well was located within the hangar and was used during the period of operation by Larry's Flying Service. The well is constructed of a 55 gallon drum sunk into the concrete slab. The site is not in use at this time. Land use controls for the airport area restrict use near and on the site. The ADOT&PF prepared and submitted paperwork to inventory the Class V injection well with EPA on November 14, 2013. On June 10, 2014 the ADOT&PF collected samples from the well. Hydrocarbon contamination (DRO and benzene) above DEC Method two, Table B, migration to groundwater cleanup levels has been identified within the well and at a location 12 inches below the bottom of the 55 gallon drum/well bottom. In addition, Arsenic, cadmium, and chromium are reported at concentrations above the DEC Method Two, Table B, migration to groundwater cleanup levels. A groundwater sample was not collected. The DRO results (26,200 mg/kg) are also above inhalation and ingestion soil cleanup levels. Additional contamination may underlay the site. There is known contamination upgradient from the site at the Galena AFS/Airport - POL tank yard, Site ST005. The ADOT &PF is proposing to close out the injection well in accordance with ADEC and EPA regulations
