Past Work on Site

The site was identified as the location of a former Radar Approach and Control Facility (RAPCON)during the 1950s. In 1991 concentrations of PCE, TCE, GRO, and DRO were found above DEC Method 2 migration to groundwater cleanup levels. Site SS015 is located at the South Apron in the southeastern portion of the Former Galena FOL. The site is a known chlorinated solvent- and fuel-contaminated soil source area, most likely resulting from previous releases from AST and maintenance activities at Site SS015. TCE and PCE concentrations appear to have spread laterally into the subsurface from the suspected source/spill area to depths of at least 36 feet bgs and are distributed in the same pattern as the dissolved-phase groundwater plume. The dissolved-phase groundwater plume extends south into Old town Galena.
