In August 2014 a contractor working for the Association of Village Council Presidents was putting storm drains in the area and discovered contamination downgradient of the former BIA school tank farm and in the vicinity of the former BIA drum storage area. Rather than direct storm water through the contaminated soil, a culvert was placed in the ditch. The contamination extends from the ground surface to at least 6 feet below ground surface. 50 cubic yards of soil were stockpiled on visqueen at a borrow pit out of town. A clean soil cap was added to reduce potential for exposure but the contamination is reportedly 35 feet from a small stream that some residents use for drinking water. A public drinking water system drinking water intake is upgradient from the source area.
